Tests Done, Paint Done

Made all the times for my CAT scan and bone scan today.

I thought I had set the alarm clock to wake me at 3:45 a.m. to take some pills.  I woke promptly at 3:46 a.m. but the alarm had not gone off.  The clock in my head woke me.  It is more dependable than my ability to set an alarm clock apparently.

It seems my oncologist and two others have split off from the group and are setting up a new office that is connected to the hospital.  Today was their last day at that location.

Surprise surprise!

I tried asking different people who work there how this happened and got very different answers.  Some employees will be going with them, some will stay where they are and some will be without a job.

The different answers depended on the individuals circumstances.

It will be more convenient as I can get all the tests at one location but as usual the hospital is a mess of additions, elevators that go to some parts and not others and parking is a crap shoot.  All the close ones are reserved for doctors.

The painters needed to work on the doors today so I left everything unlocked for them.  I shut the dogs in the kitchen  so they were not a problem.

Above is the front door.  I’m waiting to close it to be sure the paint is dry.  They created trim paint on it that hadn’t been highlighted before.

And the whole house, all done.  They even went to the local hardware store and replaced the house numbers that had been on the top of the trim around the front porch.

I just checked the job over and gave them the final check.  I am very satisfied with the job they did.  Mid Miami Painting is their name.  Let me know if you are interested in their phone number or email address.

Now it is nap time as I didn’t sleep very well last night.

ADD (Attenti0n Deficit Disorder)

The painting is moving along very well.  Even if it rains at night they can work the next afternoon.

The painters tell me they have gotten several new jobs lined up because of the sign I let them put in my front yard.  That is great.  The economy needs workers and jobs.

Tomorrow I get a CAT scan.  Since I am allergic to the iodine in IVP I need to take prednisone for 24 hours before I get the CAT scan.  Because the prednisone can upset my stomach I also take cimetidine with the prednisone.

I had the prescriptions for the pills three months ago.  I couldn’t find them this week-end.  So Monday morning I called the doctor’s office and left a voice message asking them to call them in to the drug store I go to.  I even gave them the phone number of the drug store.

Monday evening I called the drug store – no prescriptions.  At 8:30 this morning I called the drug store again – no prescriptions.

So I went out to breakfast with my friends as I had planned and then drove to the doctor’s office.  Didn’t want to leave another voice message.  They said they had called it in.

So I went to the drug store.  They said they didn’t have it.  So I used my mystic powers of intimidation and told them I would wait until they did have them.

Somehow, within two minutes, they found them.

So I was only an hour and a half late starting the drugs.  These drugs make me hyper but unable to focus on anything.  The hyperness could be useful if I could get something done.  I think it must be like ADD – drug induced ADD.

So since the test is at 9:45 a.m. tomorrow, I take pills at 9:45 a.m. (actually 11:00 or so)  3:45 p.m., 9:45 p.m., and 3:45 a.m.   And drink a bottle of flavored goop tonight and another bottle a half hour before the test.

I know – that’s more than anyone ever wanted to know about CAT scans.  It’s sure more than I ever wanted to know.  It wouldn’t be so bad if I wasn’t allergic to the iodine in the IVP.

Just had a man stop by and ask to buy some stuff that has been setting around here for decorations.  Since the painters have moved things away from the house they are more visible.

That gives me all kinds of ideas.  Just set things out in the driveway and wait.  Hmmmmmmm.

Rain so no Paint

Week-end off for painters.  One man came Friday and painted in the back.  I was hoping to have more pictures by now.  Between rain today and time off it may be a while.

This is a picture of what is done now.  The front windows are still covered with plastic in this picture.   It gives an idea of how it will look when it’s done.

2010-06 002

I still like the colors.  Lory helped me choose them.  I’ll be glad when it is all done.  Being accustomed to walking around half dressed in the mornings I now have to think about scaring the painters.

I checked the cans of paint to make sure they got the more expensive paint I was paying for.

Several errands to run today, a few groceries and pills for me and the dog.  If one year is equal to seven for a dog then Silly is older than me.

Wednesday I have more medical tests.  Results won’t be available for a while.  So I get to take all that prednisone tomorrow – yuck.  Just do as you are told – I tell myself.  Myself doesn’t always like it tho.

Rain – Paint – Rain – Paint

So far the painters worked Monday, power washing.  It rained Tuesday so they couldn’t work.  Wednesday they scraped and painted.  Now today, Thursday, it rained last night so the workers didn’t show up until 11:00.  Below  is a before and after of the porch ceiling.

2010-06 001 2010-06 004

The trim color is green and the main color will be a tan, about the color of coffee with 2 creams.

You may notice that my front porch has two doors into the house.  The one on the left goes into the “front room” or parlor.  The one straight ahead goes into the living room.  This house was built about 1907 and is a common design for that time period.

You could invite important guests into the parlor without going through any other room.  I use the former parlor as a bedroom now.  There is no closet so I have a cedar wardrobe.

I hadn’t thought about which color they would use on the porch ceiling but the green looks good.  I’m not very picky about details like that.  They have gotten a lot of the trim done in the one day they worked.  The heat index was 100 while they worked.  I felt sorry for them.  I hibernated in the A/C.

When I got up Tuesday morning the electricity was off.  Don’t know how long it had been off.  It was such a gloomy day that I was getting ready to fill an oil lamp with oil for some light when it came back on.

I try to do a little cleaning every day.  It gives me a feeling of accomplishment and a little exercise.  I have noticed that the city water makes things, like the toilet,  dirtier faster than my well water did.   That doesn’t seem right.

I’m going to have to ask the workers to move their truck so I can get my car out to go to the library.

A Thoroughly Washed House

The house painters came today and power washed the house.  Then God proceeded to do his part in washing everything, along with fire works.

2010-06 001

I finally had to make a firm decision on the color and pay the price of the paint.  I’ve decided on a really good paint, Sherwin Williams Duration, since I don’t want this to need doing again for a very long time.

We are having hot days with a thunder storm almost every afternoon or evening.   Sure hope they can fit the painting in there somewhere.  I don’t envy them working outside in this heat.

In other news, I received a check from Dr. Khan in Florida.  Hooray!!!  It went straight to the bank.  It was less than I wanted and more than they wanted so I guess that’s a compromise.

When I went to my old favorite day old bread store I found that it is closing.  They had a buy one get one free sale today so I stocked up.  Now I’ll have to find another discount baked goods store.  I sure don’t mind eating snack crackers that are not quite round, especially if they are only $1.39 a box.

The dogs are enjoying having workmen coming and going, it gives them something to bark at.  Silly is failing a bit.  She has lesions in her mouth, probably cancer.  She still eats well and seems to enjoy the same old things.

She gets 10 mg prednisone each morning and that seems to make her feel better.  One week of every month she gets antibiotics to keep the lesions from getting infected.  A year ago she had a growth removed from her mouth.  She will be 11 years old next month.  I guess we are in a holding pattern.  She still jumps in circles but doesn’t run up and down the fence with the neighbor’s dog anymore.   I don’t run around like I used to either.

Clean Up and Burning Brush

Grandson Jake wanted to help me out and earn some money so I gave him a job.  He liked the electric chain saw best of all.

2010-06 002

It had rained very hard the night before so I didn’t worry about the fire getting away from him.  At first all we could get was a bit of smoke.  Then we went to the local Dollar General and picked up a couple of fire logs.

2010-06 001

The fire logs did the trick – even brought the fire department.  It is legal to burn outside here so there was no problem.  Just a bit of excitement.

He got a lot of the old brush burned and moved the new heap of brush from the front yard to the back yard and mowed the lawn.  It took two days.   When the new brush dries out it will be ready for another fire.

Now for another subject.  I seem to have several stealth followers.  I have a site meter on here and there are people who look at this blog on a regular basis that live in places I have never been.  Even saw one from Russia once but I think that was probably a mistake.

So – stealth followers – let me hear from you, leave comments, or something.  I would love to know about you.

Storm

What  can it mean when lightning strikes and burns a six story tall figure of Jesus? LINK  <--- click here to see story.

And I thought my family was the only one that called it “touchdown Jesus”.   The figure stood in a small lake which probably made it very susceptible to lightning.

Other than touchdown Jesus it almost looked like he was going down into the water and was asking for help.

The storm took out my cable connection which includes the TV, phone and internet.  This morning the TV and phone were back up but the internet was not.

I called Time Warner,  over and over.  They hung up on me twice.  I know when they are trying to send a signal to the internet it will interfere with the phone which uses the same wires which will hang up the phone call.   Did they know that?

I finally got to the third level of technical support.  That fellow was all business and English was his first language which I greatly appreciated.

With his patient instructions I ended up taking a sticker off the bottom of the router.  There I found a hole which I was instructed to push something into for 6 seconds.  A toothpick worked very well.  That did the trick.

So I just barely found out about the lightning striking the statue of Jesus.   I hope they don’t replace it.  People made fun of it, including me.

Garage News

Thursday a.m. – Got the car to the garage and they gave me a ride back home.  For just one day it’s nice to know I’m not going anywhere.  More than one day would not work.

Once, years ago, in New Hampshire with the snow piled high, I was stuck at home with two cars in the garage that wouldn’t start.  I called a garage and they came.  They checked the oil in one of them, the oil made a string from the dip stick to the engine.  That was when I didn’t consider maintaining cars my job.

Husband was out of town for three weeks in January.  This was a common thing.

I called a taxi, bundled 3 pre-school kids into it, went to the hardware store and bought a dip stick heater.  The taxi waited for me.

The way the dip-stick heater worked, you replaced the dip stick with it and plugged it into electricity.  It heated the oil.  Then the engine would start.

I’ve learned a lot since then.  I get the oil changed on a regular basis and try to keep everything in good shape.

Thursday p.m. – Garage says it’s a broken solenoid.  They can’t get just that part – have to get the whole thing, whatever the whole thing is.  Cost just under $500.00.

It will take several days to get the “whole thing” so I have my car back till then.

Did I ever mention that IT’S ALWAYS SOMETHING!!!

Problems and Solutions

It rained all morning.  I had a doctor’s appointment at 1:30 and I also needed to pick up some things at the grocery store.

For a week or so I have not been able to get the key out of the ignition in the  car.  I’ve been locking it up with the remote button and leaving the key in the ignition.  Just kept putting off making an appointment to get it fixed.

It seems to have something to do with the gear shift.  If I could get the little box to appear around the “P” for park then I could get the key out.

So at about 10:30 I went out to do some grocery shopping but couldn’t get the remote button to unlock the car.  I first looked in the filing cabinet for an extra key but all I found was another remote key.  It didn’t work either.

So I laid down on the wet pavement and slid under the rear bumper looking and feeling for the extra key that I put under there in a magnetic box.

I couldn’t find it.  Even a few expletives didn’t make it appear.

So I called my trusty auto repair shop and they came to my rescue.  They are about 2 blocks away which is very handy at times like this.

They got the car unlocked but that didn’t solve the problem, the battery was dead. That was why the remote unlock button didn’t work.   This is a 2001 car and the original battery was due to be replaced.

So they went back and got a handy dandy portable battery charger and got the car started.

By then the rain had stopped.

I followed them back to their place of business and they sold me a new battery and made an appointment for tomorrow to get the key problem fixed.

I made it to the doctor’s appointment, got zometa and faslodex, traded books with them and then went to the grocery store.

Now I just have to get up and get going tomorrow to get the car fixed.  It’s always something but there is usually a solution.

Some Things I’ll Never Know

Why was the post office box key in the washing machine?

Why does the dog run to get a drink of water as soon as I get home?

Why during the night the sheet scoots one way and the quilt scoots the other way.

Why the garden hose always has a kink in it.

I did figure out why the unlock button markings were wearing off my car’s remote locking thingy and the lock button was still good.  To open all the doors, like for putting groceries into the back seat, you have to push the unlock button twice.  So it gets a lot more use than the lock button.

Why people might think I still am interested in a boyfriend at age 70.  Maybe they don’t know I’m on medication to block hormones.

I called Dr Khan’s office  in Florida again today.  I gave them a whole week of peace.  They will write a check to me for almost as much as I think they owe me.  They only write checks once a week.   I wonder if I would have ever gotten any money back if I hadn’t called and kept calling.  That’s another thing I’ll never know.

Estate Handling as a Divorcee

I promised to tell about estate handling of my ex-husband's estate as a divorcee.

This may be boring so be warned.

Since I have been both a divorcee and a widow – in my opinion widowhood is much better.  Although I would have avoided both if given the choice.

My first husband, Rod, died of malignant melanoma on March 5, 1982.  He had no will.  We had been divorced for less than a year.  There was no one else in the state to handle things and since our children were inheriting, I was chosen.  The other option was his girlfriend.

I tried to use Rod’s lawyer, the one he used in our divorce,  but all he could talk about was the divorce and how I wouldn’t be getting the money.  When I asked  how long it would be before money was available to pay Rod’s bills, he assumed I meant MY bills, not Rod’s.

I had been very cooperative during the divorce.  He had said so.  So I fired him.

I had paid a lawyer $60. to look at the divorce papers.  He made some suggestions that would be an advantage to Rod.  He didn’t notice that the agreement said what would happen if I died but did not mention what would happen if Rod died.   I didn’t notice that either.  I’m not a lawyer.  So I didn’t feel he would be of much help.

The next lawyer I picked by finding one who wasn’t downtown where I had to pay to park.  He was a former judge, about 7 feet tall with lots of bushy white hair.

When I sat on the chair in his office my feet didn’t touch the floor.  That should have given me a clue.  I learned later that he had been fired as a judge for keeping fees he charged for performing weddings.  There must have been more to it than that but that’s all that was reported.

He got me named executrix then told me I  couldn’t be the legal guardian of my children’s money because I was a divorcee.  Apparently, in Ohio, divorcee’s can’t be trusted to look after their children’s money.  A married woman would have been allowed to assume both jobs.  He said he would arrange a guardian for their money.

I waited a few weeks to hear from him, then I called.  He gave me a name of another lawyer who would take the job of guardian.  I called the other lawyer.  He had no idea what I was talking about.  He joked that I might be accusing him of fathering my children.  A real winner.

I made an appointment and went to see the guy I had hired.  I asked about the guardian and I suggested that the children’s money be put into an interest bearing account while the estate was settled.

He announced – in a voice that would have worked well  in the movie -  The Ten Commandments – that he couldn’t work with someone who wanted to tell him how to do his job.

I fired him.  I felt like I was firing Moses.

He refused to give me the papers until I paid him and he refused to accept a check, so I went to the bank and brought him cash to pay his bill and get my papers.

My next lawyer venture was with Hyatt which is a chain of legal offices.  On my first visit I noticed that the receptionist was wearing jeans and a sweat shirt.  My kind of office, finally.

Things dragged on from there for quite a while.  The lawyer I got had never dealt with probate court before.  I searched thru his books while he pondered how to handle things.

The ultimate solution to the guardian problem was to name my oldest child, recently turned 18, as guardian of the others money.

Of course, the youngest one used that information to claim I couldn’t tell her what to do.

The estate got settled eventually.   The time frame also included my Father’s death.

The company Rod worked for had never dealt with a death in their company before.  At first they called and said they would continue the health insurance on the children for six weeks.  I hadn’t had any health insurance for several months.  I was working for Manpower, a temporary agency.

Later they called and increased the time they would cover the children to six months.  I thanked them very much.

As September 5 (the six month limit on the kids health insurance) neared,  I found  a permanent full time job starting August 16 – with health insurance for the kids and me.

I know my new boss thought I was crazy since I asked if we were covered by insurance about three times that first day.  I worked at that place for 15 years.  There aren’t many jobs like that around anymore.  I was very lucky.

There were other problems involved – like emptying his apartment.  I had a lot of help with that from my Sister and a gentleman friend I had met six months after becoming single.

That gentleman friend became husband number two eventually.

I also had Rod’s new car to sell.  The bank wanted to repossess it since the estate couldn’t afford to make the payments on it.  Things were moving so slowly there was no actual cash available for a long time.

I had to do some fast talking to get them to let me sell it for what was owed rather than let them auction it off and the estate still owe the difference between the auction price and the loan.

They agreed to take off all late charges when I was able to send them a couple of payments from Rod’s income tax refund, the first cash the estate got.

I eventually sold it to a minister for his daughter.  I had told him why the price was firm, that it was part of an estate.  He didn’t believe me.  He kept arguing for less money.  I held firm.  The deal was finally made, at my price.

We met at the bank that held the loan to exchange his money for the bank’s title.  His check covered the exact amount owed.  He was very shocked.  Doesn’t say much for his trust in his fellow man or I should say “woman”.

There was also a life insurance policy on Rod that he and I had agreed I would be left as beneficiary if I paid the premiums.  But the beneficiary was listed as “my wife” and the death certificate I sent them said he was single.

The insurance company hired a lawyer for my kids and was suing me on their behalf over it.  So I signed the papers so the kids could have the money.  I signed them the day each of the kids received a large envelope by certified mail including our divorce papers and “their” lawyers info.

There were other family problems that I won’t discuss here.  It was a terrible time for the children.  Each of them was handed their inheritance at age 18.  None of them used it very wisely.

A psychologist explained to me that Mothers are in charge of health in a child’s mind.  We kiss the booboos and put on the band-aids.  So it was somehow my fault that their father had died, at least subconsciously.

I learned a lot about people, about lawyers, about myself and more than I ever wanted to know about the law.   It not only discriminates against women but makes it clear that the lowest form of woman is the divorced one.

I don’t know if this law has been changed or not.  I’m not a crusader, just trying to survive.  But if I were to take up a cause, that law would be IT.

If this is more of a rant than a ramble.  Sorry bout that.
